Education and Labor Committee Republican Leader Virginia Foxx (R-NC) and Higher Education and Workforce Investment Subcommittee Republican Leader Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA) sent a letter to Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh urging the Department of Labor (DOL) to withdraw its Wagner-Peyser proposed rule, which will harm state efforts to fill the 11 million unfilled jobs across America.
The Members write: “Unfortunately, this proposed rule, which would require all states to use state merit staff to provide services under the Wagner-Peyser Act Employment Service, is a one-size-fits-all approach that will harm the current efforts of states and localities to connect job seekers with work.”
The Members continue: “If finalized, this proposed rule will increase costs for states and reduce resources available for job seekers. It leaves no room for states to determine the most cost-efficient means for delivering services, even in cases where services are needed only on a temporary basis and a more flexible staffing arrangement is ideal.”
The Members conclude: “We urge you to withdraw this proposed rule so that states and localities can maintain their current flexibility to deliver employment services under the staffing model that best meets the needs of their unique economies. Failure to do so will be detrimental at a time when the country is already experiencing a jobs crisis.”
