Today, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced they will drastically limit the scope of the Collaborative Reform Initiative of the DOJ COPS Office. This program was intended to work with police departments to review, grade, and monitor progress concerning certain aspects of how they interact and work with their communities.
House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) and House Judiciary Crime Subcommittee Ranking Member Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) released the following joint statement:
“Today, the Trump Justice Department retreated from the Departments longstanding commitment to community based policing. It is clear, based on Attorney General Sessions’ previous attacks on Pattern And Practice Policing Enforcement and this most recent rollback of community policing initiatives, that the Trump Justice Department wants in no way to better community and police relations. Though the department’s announcement fails to detail the exact changes in the program, the Judiciary Committee must exercise its oversight authority to ensure the Department retains a commitment to policing practices enforcement."
