The State Department issued a statement July 20 condemning the attack on the Dohuk province of Iraq which killed and injured civilians in the area.

At least four missiles hit the Dohuk province in Iraq, specifically striking Barakh's resort area in the Zakho district, Al Jazeera reported. Among those killed in the missile strikes were three men, three women and two children. Additionally, the air raids left more than 20 Iraqi citizens wounded.

“The United States condemns the attack earlier today in the Dohuk province of Iraq, which killed and injured civilians,” State Department spokesperson Ned Price said in a statement. “The killing of civilians is unacceptable, and all states must respect their obligations under international law, including the protection of civilians.

“We extend our condolences to the families of those killed and our sympathies to those injured,” Price added, according to the statement. “We maintain our strong support for Iraq’s sovereignty and its security, stability and prosperity, including that of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region.”

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi believes Turkish forces are to blame, according to a July 21 Al Jazeera report. However, Turkey has denied these claims and instead blames the Kurdistan Workers Party for the missile strike on the Dohuk province.
