ALEXANDRIA, Va. - A federal jury convicted a Lorton, Virginia man yesterday on charges of attempted robbery, attempted possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and the use and discharge of a firearm during those crimes.
According to court records and evidence presented at trial, Thomas Todd, 33, conspired to rob a drug dealer at gunpoint in the basement of an apartment building in Lorton. The drug dealer arrived at the apartment building with an armed associate on June 24, 2016, and a shootout occurred in the lobby in the middle of the night.
Todd faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison and a maximum sentence of life in prison when sentenced on Jan. 19, 2018. Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

Roessler Jr., Fairfax County Chief of Police, made the announcement after U.S. District Judge Liam O’Grady accepted the verdict. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan Fahey and Special Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ankush Khardori and Samuel Lord are prosecuting the case.
