While Obama Administration Conducts Listening Tour, Republicans Fight for Rural Americans by Opposing the Democrats’ National Energy Tax

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Natural Resources on July 1, 2009. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, D.C., July 1, 2009 - Followingcriticism from a range of Congressional Democrats that the Obama Administration has ignored the needs of rural Americans, theWhite House yesterday announced that:

“President Obama has directed many members of his Cabinet to begin what it describes as a ‘listening tour’ of rural America this summer..."

After House Democrats passed the National Energy Tax legislation (H.R. 2454) last week, Cabinet members can expect to get an earful from rural Americans whose energy bills will spike, gas costs will skyrocket and jobs will be lost as a result of this bill.

Instead of simply listening, Republicans have stood up for Rural Americans.

Republicans have also proposed a better way forward. TheAmerican Energy Act (H.R. 2846) is an all-of-the-above approach that includes renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar, hydropower, nuclear and biomass, while also producing more American-made oil and natural gas. This is the best way to grow our economy, create new high-paying jobs, protect our environment, and provide affordable energy.
