The Biden administration recently announced the federal government would provide $20 million for the construction of a new terminal at Pittsburgh International Airport.
The airport reportedly plans to construct a new 700,000-square-foot landside terminal featuring a security screening checkpoint, customs baggage claim areas and approximately 3,300 parking spaces, according to a July 7 report from Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
“Americans deserve modern airports that meet the needs of their families and growing passenger demand," U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said, PPG reported. “I don’t think anybody could look at airports across America today and say that the existing system and existing levels of funding have been adequate."
This funding comes from a $1 billion package granted to the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Aviation Administration through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act, which was passed in 2021, PPG reported. This financing is made available by the Airport Terminal Program and will continue to distribute $1 billion annually for awards for the next five years.
“This funding will allow Pittsburgh International Airport to build a new terminal, improve the passenger experience and bring more flights and more people to Pittsburgh every day," U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., stated, according to PPG.
The Allegheny County Airport Authority said the remaining modernization would be funded by a mix of higher airport fees, state gaming revenue and earnings from natural gas extraction on airport grounds, PPG reported.
