BOISE, Idaho - On Sept. 16, the Idaho Mustang Club and the Bureau of Land Management Boise District will host a trail ride at 10 a.m. through the Sands Basin Herd Management Area - one of six herd management areas in Idaho where wild horses may be found roaming rangelands. The ride is open to all equines and equestrians.
The two-hour trail ride, while fairly easy, does include some water crossings. Participants are encouraged to bring water for their horses, beverages and chairs for themselves, and a side dish for a potluck following the ride. Please RSVP to Becky at 208-463-0656 or Idahomustangs2009@gmail.com
To get to the Sands Basin HMA, travel Hwy 95 heading toward Jordan Valley, turn right onto the gravel road at mile marker 8, and travel along that road for six miles to the Sands Basin HMA. There will be signs posted.
The Sands Basin HMA was entirely burned during the 2015 Soda Fire. Most of the wild horses were gathered during an emergency operation following the fire. The appropriate number of wild horses will be returned to the Sands Basin and Hardtrigger HMAs once the range recovers and the rehabilitation objectives have been met. The BLM is committed to maintaining a healthy wild horse population over the long-term and a healthy rangeland habitat.
