(BUTTE, Mont.) - As fire restrictions go to Stage 1 in Broadwater, Jefferson, and Lewis & Clark counties, the Bureau of Land Management is also re-opening the North Hills area to shooting.
The Rescission of Temporary Shooting Restrictions order went into effect at 12:01 a.m. on Sept. 19.
The agency had temporarily closed its public lands in the North Hills near Helena to recreational shooting in July due to hot weather conditions and a shooting-related fire that started in the area over the July 4th holiday.
“As the weather cools and the fire danger lessens, I’m pleased to be able to lift the prohibition against discharging firearms on our North Hills lands," said Scott Haight, field manager for the Butte Field Office. “However, I would like to remind folks that just because we’ve got some moisture in the air, it doesn’t mean the fire danger has completely abated. We urge everyone to continue to use caution when recreating on public lands."
