GUNNISON, Colo. - Gunsight Pass Road users will experience short-term, increased truck traffic and temporary closures over the next two months due to an abandoned mine cleanup project. The Bureau of Land Management Colorado Gunnison Field Office; the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety; the Coal Creek Watershed Coalition; and the Crested Butte Land Trust are coordinating to conduct the abandoned mine land cleanup project through Oct. 31, 2017.
While the road will generally remain open during the cleanup, occasional closures are required to ensure site access. They will likely occur all day Monday through Friday.
Please be aware of increased truck traffic in the area as materials and equipment are transported to the site. For the safety of the public and the workers, we ask that you obey the temporary closures throughout the duration of this project.
“Public safety is our number one concern," said Gunnison Field Office Manager Elijah Waters. “We are happy to be working closely with our partners to prevent the release of contaminants into the environment."
