Washington, D.C. - Today, House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul (R-TX) and Chairman Gregory W. Meeks (D-NY) issued the following statement.
“We welcome the Sudan Bar Association’s draft transitional constitution framework, and their efforts to engage a diverse set of Sudanese pro-democracy stakeholders in putting forward this proposal. This Framework could help build an inclusive new civilian governing arrangement following the Oct. 25, 2021 military coup in Sudan. We urge all stakeholders to consider this document seriously, take steps to further develop its principles constructively, and build consensus around a path forward that includes a wide range of civil society representatives.
“We are pleased that U.S. Ambassador John Godfrey has arrived in Khartoum, signaling the deepening ties between the people of Sudan and the United States. But cooperation between our governments will only occur once a civilian-led transitional government is established. We reiterate our calls for accountability for violence and human rights abuses, and continue to stand with the Sudanese people in their pursuit of democracy, peace, and justice."
