Farr Statement on Funding Allocations to Discretionary Spending of Agriculture Bill

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of HCA on May 12, 2011. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Sam Farr (D-CA) issued the following statement in response to the Republican Majority's proposed 302(b) Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Subcommittee Allocation for Fiscal Year 2012:

"At a time when American families are beginning to see the light out of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, Republicans are threatening to move progress back at the expense of jobs and services for the most vulnerable.

On top of the drastic cuts enacted in the Fiscal Year 2011 bills, adding an additional 13% cut in allocations to the Agriculture bill will not only further limit our government's ability to safeguard our nation's food supply, but will severely effect families still struggling to make ends meet. This level of cuts is reckless and misguided, and is directly running counter to what we need to support an economic recovery that puts people back to work and encourages economic development.

We all understand that we have a responsibility to get our fiscal house in order, but doing so at the expense of an economic recovery and on the backs of the most vulnerable is not the way to do it."
