First Woman of Color to Hold Position
Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY), Ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, today announced the retirement of David Pomerantz as Staff Director of the Committee minority, and the promotion of Shalanda Young to the position.
“David Pomerantz has served the Appropriations Committee and the Congress with integrity and skill," said Lowey. “Members of the Committee, staff, and the full Democratic caucus are deeply indebted for his tireless service and dedication to the Committee and the institution of Congress. David’s expertise and commitment will be sorely missed."
David Pomerantz served on the Democratic staff of the Rules Committee from 1983 through 2001. He joined the Appropriations Committee in 2001, and served as Professional Staff, Clerk of the Commerce, Justice, State Subcommittee, Director of the nonpartisan Surveys & Investigations Staff, and has served as Staff Director since 2010. Prior to his work on Capitol Hill, Dr. Pomerantz was an Assistant Professor of Political Philosophy at SUNY Stony Brook.
Lowey also announced that succeeding Pomerantz as Staff Director is Shalanda Young, who currently serves as Deputy Staff Director on the Committee.
“Shalanda Young has been a trusted advisor to me and other Committee Democrats for years, and Members rightly value her integrity, institutional knowledge, and commitment to Democratic values," said Lowey. “I am thrilled that she will serve as Staff Director and help lead our efforts to protect critical investments and help American families."
"David's expertise, dedication, and passion have been a guiding force in our fight for the resources Americans need to build a better future for their families," said House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. “As Shalanda Young prepares to take the helm of the Appropriations Committee staff, we will rely on the depth of her experience and strategic leadership to navigate our efforts to secure a better future for all hard-working Americans."
Shalanda Young joined the House Appropriations Committee in 2007 and has served as Detailee, Professional Staff, Democratic Clerk of the Legislative Branch Subcommittee, and currently as Deputy Staff Director. Prior to Capitol Hill, she served as a budget and public health analyst at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Ms. Young is the first woman of color to serve as Staff Director for either party on either the House or Senate Appropriations Committee.
