Lowey, House Democrats Introduce Two New Bills to Immediately Reopen Federal Government

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of HCA on Jan. 14, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Nita M. Lowey (D-NY-17) and House Democrats today introduced two Continuing Resolutions to reopen the federal government and end the Trump Shutdown.

The first bill would reopen all closed federal agencies through February 1. It is expected to be considered in the House tomorrow under suspension of the rules.

To provide an additional option, Chairwoman Lowey has introduced a second Continuing Resolution that would reopen all closed federal agencies through February 28. That Continuing Resolution is expected to be considered by the House under a Rule on Thursday.

“Now in its 24th day, the Trump Shutdown is creating pain and misery for families, businesses, and communities across the United States. The House has done its job and passed six pieces of legislation to reopen the government, but Senate Republicans refuse to take yes for an answer and end the shutdown," Chairwoman Lowey said. “It is critical that we reopen the federal government, and these two new Continuing Resolutions offer President Trump and Senate Republicans additional options to end the shutdown while allowing time for negotiation on border security and immigration policy. We should pass them into law without delay."

Since Jan. 3, the House has passed six pieces of legislation to reopen the federal government. That includes a package of six bipartisan Senate bills, four individual bipartisan Senate bills, and a Continuing Resolution for Homeland Security through February 8. Senate Republicans, acting at the behest of President Trump, have refused to consider the bills.
