WASHINGTON - House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Nita M. Lowey (D-NY-17) released the following statement after Congressman José Serrano announced his retirement at the end of the 116th Congress:
“Congressman José Serrano is a distinguished leader and a dear friend. When he retires at the end of his term, he will be missed both in the New York delegation and on the Appropriations Committee.
“Congressman Serrano has been a champion for civil rights, compassionate and humane immigration policies, and New York’s fair share of federal funding. As the longest serving Puerto Rican in Congress, he has fought especially hard since the devastation of Hurricane Maria to help the island recover and rebuild. As Chairman of the Commerce-Justice-Science Subcommittee, he has been a key leader supporting climate change research, gun violence prevention, and a fair Census. Always quick with a joke, José’s wit will be especially missed.
“I am grateful for Congressman Serrano’s thoughtful service to Congress and to our country. As he begins a new chapter, José and his family have my very best wishes."
