Energy and Commerce Committee Republican Leader Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) issued the following statement regarding the 2023 Consolidated Appropriations Act:
“This massive, 4155-page, spending bill is a perfect example of how the legislative process is broken. To put it into perspective, the average length of a Bible is 1,200 pages. This is no way to run a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. At a time when Americans are experiencing record-high inflation, surging energy costs, and a worsening border crisis, this bill fails to meaningfully address the most pressing issues facing the country.
“Throughout my tenure, I have fought against wasteful spending and believe we must fix this broken system, which hurts hardworking American taxpayers and will shackle our children and grandchildren with mountains of debt. The first bill I cosponsored when elected to Congress was a balanced budget constitutional amendment. We need that now more than ever. Congress must aspire to do better than this reckless government spending process.
“Energy and Commerce Republicans worked tirelessly to guide many bipartisan efforts through our committee and the House this Congress. Unfortunately, because of Senate inaction, Congressional Democrats opted to cram only some of them into this massive bill while continuing to prioritize funding for a barrage of radical policies that will only further divide the country.
“There simply isn’t enough accountability built into this bill. It’s long past time that Congress do its job and consider legislation to fund the government in a way that prioritizes an open and accountable process.”
