The NPS is completing construction on the north section of the parkway in phases. Work has been underway for the temporary road widening in the median along the northbound travel lanes between I-495 and Route 123. The NPS expects to begin using the reversible lanes in mid-April.
Additionally, construction activities have begun on several bridges throughout the project. Crews may not always be visible to motorists when lane closures are in place; however, these lane closures are necessary to stage equipment and keep crews safe. Construction will impact drivers and park visitors for the duration of the rehabilitation. A minimum of one lane of traffic in each direction will remain open at all times. The project is anticipated to be completed in late 2025.
Drivers can view construction updates and opt-in to receive email updates (about traffic impacts, meeting notices, and information about major milestones) on the project webpage.
Background:
The rehabilitation of the northern section of the parkway was announced by the Department of the Interior on December 7, 2021. In partnership with the National Park Service, the Federal Highway Administration awarded a $161 million contract to rehabilitate this section of the George Washington Memorial Parkway. The project will improve the driving experience, safety and water drainage while retaining and reviving the historic beauty and significance of the parkway – including opening scenic views to Washington, D.C.
