On the Hill

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Iraqi Defense Minister Thabet al-Abbasi's inaugural meeting marks the United States and Iraq's pledge to strengthen security partnership and persevere in defeating ISIS in the region.

According to Pentagon Press Secretary Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder, "Secretary Austin lauded the JSCD for its importance in advancing an enduring U.S.-Iraq security partnership."

A significant milestone in the enduring partnership between the United States and Iraq was reached today as Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III and Iraqi Defense Minister Thabet al-Abbasi convened at the Pentagon for the inaugural session of the U.S.-Iraq Joint Security Cooperation Dialogue (JSCD). This crucial meeting marks the reaffirmation of both nations' commitment to the security partnership and the shared goal of defeating ISIS.

In a Twitter post, Defense Secretary Austin expressed his warm welcome to Iraqi Defense Minister al-Abbasi and leaders from the Iraqi Ministry of Defense (@modmiliq) and the Iraqi Counter Terrorism Service (@iraqicts). The leaders gathered to discuss the future trajectory of their security partnership and to underscore their dedication to the lasting defeat of ISIS.

The history between the United States and Iraq dates back to the early 2000s, and it has seen a significant evolution. From 2003 to 2012, the United States provided a staggering $60.64 billion to support Iraq's security forces and civilian reconstruction efforts, according to the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction. This financial backing played an instrumental role in shaping Iraq's security landscape and promoting its recovery.

One of the pivotal collaborative achievements emerged in the fight against ISIS. Through joint efforts and in coordination with the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, the United States played a vital role in supporting Iraq's liberation from the clutches of the terrorist organization. The monumental milestone was reached in December 2017 when Iraq triumphantly reclaimed its territory from the grasp of ISIS.

In recent times, Iraq has risen as a regional partner for the United States. It is recognized as a voice of moderation and democracy within the Middle East, showcasing its commitment to stability and progress in the region. Iraq boasts robust government institutions, including an active legislature, contributing to its constructive role on the international stage.
