Austin III and Iraqi Defense Minister Thabet al-Abbasi convened at the Pentagon for the inaugural session of the U.S.-Iraq Joint Security Cooperation Dialogue (JSCD). In a Twitter post, Defense Secretary Austin expressed his warm welcome to Iraqi Defense Minister al-Abbasi and leaders from the Iraqi Ministry of Defense (@modmiliq) and the Iraqi Counter Terrorism Service (@iraqicts). The leaders gathered to discuss the future trajectory of their security partnership and to underscore their dedication to the lasting defeat of ISIS.
The history between the United States and Iraq dates back to the early 2000s, and it has seen a significant evolution. From 2003 to 2012, the United States provided a staggering $60.64 billion to support Iraq's security forces and civilian reconstruction efforts, according to the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction. This financial backing played an instrumental role in shaping Iraq's security landscape and promoting its recovery.
One of the pivotal collaborative achievements emerged in the fight against ISIS. Through joint efforts and in coordination with the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, the United States played a vital role in supporting Iraq's liberation from the clutches of the terrorist organization.
