Department of Treasury names Hizballah agents and financial facilitators in Lebanon and South America

The U.S. Department of the Treasury, in collaboration with the Drug Enforcement Administration, has designated key Hizballah operatives and financial intermediaries in South America and Lebanon. This action targets individuals and organizations involved in funding Hizballah's terrorist activities and facilitating their presence in Latin America.

One of the individuals named in this action is Amer Mohamed Akil Rada, a top Hizballah agent who was involved in the terrorist attack on the Asociacion Mutual Israelita Argentina in 1994. Amer and his partners run a business that supplies charcoal to Lebanon, which is used to fund Hizballah's activities.

Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Brian E. Nelson, stated that this action demonstrates the U.S. government's commitment to pursuing Hizballah operatives and financiers, no matter where they are located. The aim is to prevent individuals and organizations from taking advantage of the American and global financial systems to finance terrorism.

In accordance with E.O. 13224, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has designated this network of individuals and companies with offices in Lebanon and South America. Amer Mohamed Akil Rada, a lifelong Hizballah member, has worked for the organization for over ten years and has organized various business ventures, donating a significant portion of the profits to Hizballah.

This action by the Department of the Treasury is a significant step in disrupting Hizballah's financial networks and preventing their ability to carry out terrorist activities. The U.S. government remains committed to combating terrorism and ensuring that those who support or finance terrorist organizations are held accountable.

  • Amer Mohamed Akil Rada (Amer) is a lifelong Hizballah member who now resides in Lebanon but formerly worked in South America in an operational capacity for the organization for more than ten years. Amer worked for Hizballah's External Security Organization (ESO), which is in charge of the organization's extraterritorial operations, as a senior operative. Amer has organized the operations of numerous business ventures for Hizballah, including the shipment of charcoal from Colombia to Lebanon. Amer, a leader and operative of Hizballah, donates up to 80% of the profits from his business to the organization.
