CDC advises all individuals aged 6 months and above to get updated COVID-19 vaccine

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) strongly recommended everyone aged 6 months and older to get the updated COVID-19 vaccine. This move comes as a strategy to fend off the potentially grave repercussions of the COVID-19 illness that are anticipated this fall and winter, according to a press release.

The updated formulations of the COVID-19 vaccines developed by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna are set to be available to the public later this week.

“We have more tools than ever to prevent the worst outcomes from COVID-19. CDC is now recommending updated COVID-19 vaccination for everyone 6 months and older to better protect you and your loved ones,” CDC Director Mandy Cohen, M.D., M.P.H said.

This directive follows the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) authorization and approval of the updated mRNA COVID-19 vaccines on Sept. 11. The vaccines aim to restore protection against the virus variants predominantly responsible for infections and hospitalizations.

Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra backed CDC’s recommendation in a statement, underlining the pivotal role vaccinations have played in safeguarding millions from the virus.

“Following the Biden-Harris administration’s launch of the largest adult vaccination program in our nation’s history, COVID-19 vaccines saved millions of lives, kept countless people out of the hospital and provided peace of mind for the country. As fall and winter approach, I encourage everyone six months and older to get an updated COVID-19 vaccine to protect themselves and their loved ones,” Becerra said.

Consistent research and studies corroborate the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines in reducing the risks of symptomatic COVID-19 and enhancing protection against severe illness, hospitalization and death, according to the HHS. The administration ensures that most Americans will be able to receive the COVID-19 vaccine for free. For individuals with health insurance, the majority of the plans will cover the vaccination at no extra cost.

Those without health insurance or whose plans do not cover the cost are still entitled to free vaccines available at local health centers and pharmacies.
