TechNet Senior Vice President Carl Holshouser recently sent a letter to the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee ahead of its hearing on healthcare and AI. On October 27, TechNet released a federal framework aimed at assisting policymakers in managing AI risks while upholding the United States' global leadership in AI.
In the letter, Holshouser explained the potential of AI to revolutionize medical treatments, enhance diagnostics and disease prediction, and accelerate the development of new treatments. With the use of AI, Moderna was able to develop a COVID-19 vaccine in record time, and researchers at MIT are creating antibiotics to combat drug-resistant infections. AI also saves lives by reducing brain scan review time, making accurate predictions about disease-causing DNA mutations, and creating individualized medical devices. It also helps underrepresented populations access clinical trials and provides visual interpretation tools for blind people. However, recognizing and addressing AI risks is crucial for responsible development.
"AI has the potential to transform healthcare to the benefit of all Americans. However, recognizing and addressing the genuine risks associated with AI is crucial for its responsible development," Holshouser wrote in the letter. "It is important to note that AI technologies are governed by existing law. However, policymakers can support AI innovation and address risks through careful policymaking."
On October 27, TechNet released a federal framework to help policymakers address AI risks while maintaining the US's global AI leadership. The framework includes five sections, addressing risk-based regulations, responsible AI evaluations, bias mitigation, advanced system security, and a resilient innovation workforce.
