U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona recently addressed the issue of book bans at the "Shelved Voices" symposium held at the MLK Library. The event highlighted the impact of book censorship on students and communities.

Cardona began by expressing his gratitude for being invited to speak, emphasizing the importance of books in shaping students' lives. He referenced Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop's idea that books serve as “mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors,” helping individuals understand their own experiences and those of others.

Cardona pointed out that over 4 million students have experienced reading censorship due to book bans. He described these bans as "cynical, hateful efforts to censor stories of, and by, people or color or LGBTQ Americans." According to him, such actions prevent students from learning about marginalized communities' history, arts, culture, and contributions.

As a parent himself, Cardona expressed concern about children missing out on literature that reflects diverse identities. He argued that book bans are attempts to erase American history's complexity and questioned whether those who support such measures truly represent American freedom.

He commended educators and parents who oppose political interference in education: "Here’s what I know to be true: educators and parents don’t want politicians dictating what their kids can learn, think, and believe."

Cardona praised student activist Edha Gupta for her efforts against book bans in her Pennsylvania school district. When more than 300 books were targeted for removal, including works like “Ven a Mi Casa” by Dr. Seuss and biographies of Rosa Parks, Gupta led protests that eventually reversed the ban.

Gupta's activism has garnered national attention; she has appeared on news programs, received an award from The King Center, and delivered a TEDx talk. She is also co-authoring a forthcoming book titled "Fighting Censorship: A Handbook for Pushing Back on Book Bans" with Christina Ellis.

Concluding his remarks with optimism for future generations inspired by young activists like Gupta, Cardona introduced her to the audience.
