The 2024 Global Sports Mentoring Program (GSMP), a collaboration between the Department of State and espnW, has commenced. This initiative, now in its 13th year, seeks to utilize the influence of sports and mentorship to engage international women in sports alongside American industry executives. The program aims to foster a global network of women in sports to enhance access to education, economic equity, and societal inclusion.
This year's program will see American mentors paired with 15 emerging women leaders from various countries including Azerbaijan, Bolivia, Brazil, Croatia, Czech Republic, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Mexico, New Zealand, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania, Trinidad & Tobago, and Zimbabwe. These mentors are professionals from prominent U.S. sports organizations such as the Big East Conference, Creative Artists Agency, Double Verify, ESPN, Monumental Sports and Entertainment among others.
The GSMP focuses on professional development through networking and capacity building. Upon returning home after the program concludes, participants will implement action plans developed with their mentors. These plans address issues like professional opportunities in sports industries and grassroots engagement with underserved communities.
Since its inception, the Global Sports Mentoring Program has included 177 women from 74 countries.
