The Department of Commerce and Natcast have announced that Sunnyvale, California, is the anticipated location for the CHIPS for America Design and Collaboration Facility (DCF), a part of the National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC). This facility aims to advance semiconductor design research, workforce development, investment, and collaboration within the semiconductor value chain.
The initiative aligns with President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, addressing the need to strengthen the U.S. semiconductor supply chain and create quality jobs. The DCF will bring together NSTC members to tackle challenges such as developing a skilled workforce and providing secure cloud-based services.
"The research and development component of the CHIPS and Science Act is fundamental to our long-term national security," stated Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo. She emphasized that this facility would offer access to advanced research tools and workforce opportunities across the nation.
Lael Brainard, National Economic Advisor, remarked on Sunnyvale's designation as a premier location for semiconductor R&D. Laurie E. Locascio from the Department of Commerce highlighted how the facility will aid researchers and companies in overcoming industry challenges through collaboration.
Deirdre Hanford, CEO of Natcast, noted Silicon Valley's dynamic ecosystem surrounding Sunnyvale as an ideal environment for fostering innovation among NSTC members. The DCF will support collaboration among industry leaders, academia, investors, and government partners while enhancing local and national ecosystems.
The DCF is expected to be one of several flagship R&D facilities under CHIPS for America, including other initiatives like the EUV Accelerator and forthcoming Prototyping Facility. These facilities aim to provide critical technologies for researchers nationwide.
Further details about selecting affiliated technical centers will be announced later by the Department and Natcast.
