U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has issued a series of recommendations for travelers in anticipation of the busy holiday travel season. Troy Miller, CBP Senior Official Performing the Duties of Commissioner, emphasized the agency's role in ensuring safe and efficient travel. "As the public gears up for another busy holiday travel season, CBP personnel are on the frontline to ensure safe and efficient travel for all," he stated.
Travelers are advised to prepare their documents ahead of time, including having a valid U.S. passport and identification card for re-entry into the United States. Those using the Visa Waiver Program should apply for their I-94 in advance to avoid delays at ports of entry.
CBP is offering front-of-the-line privileges at southwest border points of entry for those who submit I-94 applications electronically. The CBP One™ mobile application can assist travelers needing inspections for agricultural or biological products upon arrival.
For air travelers, conditionally approved Trusted Traveler Programs members can use Enrollment on Departure or Arrival options. The Mobile Passport Control app is available to speed up processing times for eligible travelers.
At land ports of entry, Ready Lanes offer faster processing with a Radio Frequency Identification Document such as an enhanced driver’s license or passport card. Global Entry members may also use Trusted Traveler lanes with their TTP card.
Travelers are reminded to declare food, cash, and memorabilia when entering the United States. Failure to do so could result in financial penalties and confiscation of items. Additionally, CBP cautions against purchasing counterfeit merchandise while abroad due to safety concerns and intellectual property violations.
Duty exemptions apply only to personal use items or gifts brought back from abroad; resale items do not qualify. Medications should be properly labeled and in original containers since many foreign medications are not approved in the U.S.
