Ryan K. Buchanan, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard S. Moultrie, Jr. has been appointed as the Acting U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, succeeding Ryan K. Buchanan. The appointment became effective on January 20, 2024, under the Federal Vacancies Reform Act.
Ryan K. Buchanan praised Moultrie’s credentials and leadership skills, stating, "Richard S. Moultrie, Jr. is an accomplished trial lawyer and a career prosecutor who lives the mission of the Department of Justice." He added that Moultrie has "the trust and faith of the public servants of the United States Attorney’s Office" and is expected to continue working diligently to maintain safety and uphold legal standards in the district.
Moultrie expressed his gratitude for having worked closely with Buchanan as First Assistant U.S. Attorney. He committed to continuing the district's mission: "Along with the dedicated and talented attorney, administrative, and legal support staff of our office, I will steadfastly continue our District’s mission to prosecute federal crimes."
With significant experience in federal court cases, Moultrie previously served as Chief of the Violent Crime & National Security Section in the office. His professional accolades include membership in the American College of Trial Lawyers and receiving awards such as the U.S. Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award.
Moultrie's educational background includes a Juris Doctor from the University of Texas at Austin School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts from Morehouse College.
