A Mexican national is facing federal charges following his arrest by U.S. Border Patrol agents for allegedly attempting to smuggle two undocumented juveniles through New Mexico.
The complaint states that on January 23, 2025, Border Patrol agents stopped Jesus Antonio Rodriguez-Bermudez on New Mexico State Road 26. This highway is known for being used by smugglers. Agents noticed suspicious driving behavior and conducted a traffic stop. During the stop, they found two unaccompanied juvenile males hidden under a blanket in the back of the vehicle. The juveniles were later identified as brothers, aged 7 and 9.
Rodriguez-Bermudez allegedly admitted to transporting the juveniles from El Paso, Texas to Albuquerque, New Mexico as part of a smuggling operation when questioned by agents.
He will remain in custody pending trial, which has not yet been scheduled. If convicted, Rodriguez-Bermudez could face up to 10 years in prison.
U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez and Chief Patrol Agent Anthony Scott Good of the U.S. Border Patrol El Paso Sector announced the arrest.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Border Patrol and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Ry Ellison.
