Aniq-Kai Covington, a 16-year-old from Washington, D.C., has been charged as an adult in connection with an armed carjacking incident that occurred on August 13, 2024. The charges were announced by U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin, Jr., and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department.
Court documents reveal that police responded to the scene at around 9:15 p.m. on the day of the incident in Southeast D.C. Officers found a victim who reported being approached by at least two suspects while sitting in their vehicle waiting for a family member. One suspect pointed a firearm at the victim, demanding they exit the vehicle, while another suspect attempted to open the passenger door. After complying and exiting the car, the victim was robbed of their wallet and cell phone before the suspects drove away northbound on 31st Street SE in the stolen vehicle.
The vehicle was later found unoccupied on High Street SE about 15 minutes after officers arrived at the scene. A forensic examination of the car revealed a latent fingerprint on the interior passenger’s side door handle that matched Covington's.
Covington appeared in court where he was ordered detained, with a preliminary hearing set for February 14, 2025.
The case is under investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lauren Winer.
It is important to note that these charges are allegations, and all defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
