Chairman John Moolenaar and Representative Chris Smith have addressed a letter to Lord Peter Mandelson, the UK Ambassador to the United States, expressing concerns over plans for a new Chinese Embassy in London. The proposed site at Royal Mint Court would host the largest Chinese diplomatic mission in Europe.
The letter, sent ahead of Prime Minister Keir Starmer's meeting with President Donald Trump, warns against rewarding the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) with increased diplomatic presence due to its human rights record and suppression of political dissent. Chairman Moolenaar emphasized, "The U.K. must not reward the Chinese Communist Party with greater diplomatic influence while it continues to engage in repressive actions against its own people and against those who dare to speak out."
Rep. Smith highlighted issues such as the unjust detention of UK citizen Jimmy Lai in Hong Kong and concerns about products made using forced labor entering UK markets. He stated, “There is no good reason to give China the gift of greater influence and espionage, the risks to British citizens and global security should be clear.”
The lawmakers urged Prime Minister Starmer to focus on securing Jimmy Lai's release during his discussions with President Trump. They also stressed that granting such a prominent position to China could embolden its intimidation efforts across Europe.
The letter outlines various grievances including China's transnational repression operations, which reportedly involve surveillance and harassment within the UK and other parts of Europe. It calls on UK authorities to reconsider any tentative approval for this embassy project.
The communication reflects ongoing concerns about China's international conduct and its implications for global security and democratic values.
