Sean Kingston and mother guilty of fraud in luxury merchandise scheme

Hayden O’Byrne United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida | The Florida Bar

Last week, Sean Kingston, whose real name is Kisean Paul Anderson, and his mother, Janice Eleanor Turner, were convicted in Miami. A federal jury found them guilty of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and four counts of wire fraud. The conviction relates to a scheme to deceive luxury merchandise vendors out of over $1,000,000 in property.

Between April 2023 and March 2024, Anderson contacted victims via a social media platform to purchase high-end merchandise. After negotiating deals, Anderson would invite sellers to his upscale homes in Broward County. He utilized his celebrity status to assure the victims by offering promotional opportunities or mentioning potential celebrity clients.

When it was time for payment, Anderson or Turner sent fake wire transfer receipts, crafted by Turner, as payment for items like a bullet-proof Escalade, watches, and a 232-inch LED TV. The funds never cleared as the receipts were fake, and no legitimate money transfers occurred. Victims grew suspicious and often remained unpaid unless they pursued legal action or involved law enforcement.

The sentencing hearing for Anderson and Turner is scheduled for July 11 before U.S. District Judge David Liebowitz. They could face up to 20 years in prison for each count.

The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Hayden O’Byrne for the Southern District of Florida, Special Agent in Charge Rafael Barros of the U.S. Secret Service (USSS), Miami Field Office, and Sheriff Gregory Tony of the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO).

The case was investigated by the USSS Miami and BSO, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Marc Anton and Trevor Jones prosecuting.
