Hayden O’Byrne United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida | The Florida Bar
A Jacksonville man has been sentenced by a South Florida federal court to 33 years and 9 months in prison for offenses involving child sexual abuse material. The man, David Wayne Currin Jr., 30, pleaded guilty to producing and transporting visual depictions of child sexual exploitation on January 23.
Currin was arrested on October 30, 2024, at Miami Seaport after arriving from The Bahamas on a cruise ship. During an inspection by Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) found 260 images and 26 videos of child sexual abuse on Currin's smartphone, some involving an infant or toddler.
The sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney Hayden P. O’Byrne for the Southern District of Florida and José R. Figueroa, Acting Special Agent in Charge of HSI's Miami office.
The case was a joint investigation by HSI Miami, HSI Jacksonville, with CBP's support. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ilana Malkin handled the prosecution.
This investigation was part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative by the Department of Justice since May 2006 to tackle the issue of child sexual exploitation. The project aims to coordinate federal, state, and local activities to apprehend individuals who exploit children and to rescue victims.
