U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), in collaboration with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), recently captured a criminal fugitive sought by Brazilian authorities. The individual, Jomar Henrique Souza-Santos, 33, was wanted for not serving a sentence in Brazil following convictions for homicide and illegal firearm possession. Souza-Santos was arrested on March 20 in Marlboro, Massachusetts, by ICE Boston officers and DEA New England agents.
ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations acting Field Office Director Patricia H. Hyde stated, "Jomar Henrique Souza-Santos murdered a person in his native country and attempted to subvert justice by hiding out in Massachusetts. By his own selfish refusal to repay his debt to society, he presented a threat to the residents of New England. ICE Boston will not allow our communities to become safe havens for the world’s reprobates. We will continue to prioritize the safety of our public by removing criminal alien threats from our neighborhoods."
On July 23, 2022, Souza-Santos illegally entered the United States near El Paso, Texas, and was arrested by the U.S. Border Patrol. ICE Boston issued a notice for him to appear before a Justice Department immigration judge on September 23, 2022, and subsequently released him on an order of recognizance. Brazilian authorities later issued an arrest warrant for Souza-Santos on October 27, 2023, for failing to serve his sentence.
