Democratic National Committee moves to nullify David Hogg’s election as vice chair

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has announced its intention to nullify the election of Vice Chair David Hogg due to alleged violations of party rules. This decision was revealed in a recent report.

David Hogg, known for his activism in gun control and as a survivor of the 2018 Parkland school shooting, was elected as one of five vice chairs of the DNC in February 2025. His election was considered a significant step towards engaging younger voters within the party. However, according to the DNC's Credentials Committee, a procedural violation during the voting process led to their recommendation in May 2025 to nullify the election results. The committee's decision is officially said as unrelated to Hogg's advocacy or reformist positions, though it is perceived by some as influenced by internal opposition to his push for change within the party.

The procedural issue involves the DNC's gender parity rules, which mandate that no more than half of the vice chairs be of the same gender. The February election resulted in multiple male candidates being selected, including Hogg and Malcolm Kenyatta. This prompted a challenge from Oklahoma DNC member Kalyn Free, who contended that the election process violated these bylaws. The Credentials Committee voted 13-2 to void the February results and recommended conducting a new election with separate ballots.

Hogg has publicly criticized the Democratic Party for alienating young men and failing to address their concerns. He argued on "Real Time with Bill Maher" that younger men feel judged and ostracized by the party, leading them to support candidates they do not fully agree with but who do not make them feel marginalized. He emphasized that the party needs to become more inclusive and focus on engaging young people meaningfully.

The Democratic National Committee serves as the principal organization of the U.S. Democratic Party, responsible for promoting Democratic candidates and coordinating national election strategies. It is headed by a chairperson along with five vice chairpersons, a treasurer, a secretary, and a national finance chair elected by its members. The committee establishes rules for caucuses and primaries that choose delegates for the Democratic National Convention and plays an essential role in shaping party platforms and policies.
