Two men from South Florida have been charged with mail theft following their identification through public-released surveillance footage. According to the charging complaint and indictment, Wilfredo Rivero, 31, was observed on April 26 forcibly opening a cluster of mailboxes at an apartment complex in Sunrise, Florida. After accessing the mailboxes, Rivero inspected and removed several pieces of mail. On April 28, he returned to the same location with Fernando Bernabe Rodriguez, 28. Both were captured on surveillance prying open another set of mailboxes and taking mail.

The case gained public attention when CBS News Miami broadcasted a news story on May 9 about the incident, showing the surveillance video from April 28 to aid the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) in identifying the suspects. Following this broadcast, several tips regarding the identities of Rivero and Rodriguez were received by the USPIS national hotline.

The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Hayden P. O’Byrne of the Southern District of Florida and acting Inspector in Charge Bladismir Rojo of USPIS. The investigation was led by USPIS with significant assistance from the public and support from both Sunrise Police Department and Hialeah Police Department.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Killoran is handling the prosecution of this case.

It is important to note that an indictment is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
