In a Senate Commerce Subcommittee hearing on Consumer Protection, Technology, and Data Privacy, Senator Ted Cruz criticized the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for failing to uphold anti-doping standards. The hearing was titled “WADA Shame: Swimming in Denial Over Chinese Doping.” Cruz highlighted concerns over WADA's handling of doping cases involving Chinese athletes at the Olympics.
Senator Cruz pointed out that WADA has not been transparent, citing its lack of response to a bipartisan letter he sent with Ranking Member Maria Cantwell. He urged that American taxpayer funds should be withheld from WADA until it commits to ensuring clean competition and full accountability for doping violations.
During his prepared remarks, Senator Cruz emphasized the cultural significance of sports, noting their role in teaching important life skills and uniting Americans during events like the Olympics. He remarked on the importance of fair competition and adherence to rules, stating that doping undermines these values.
Cruz referenced recent reports indicating that WADA did not enforce doping rules against 23 Chinese swimmers who tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs before competing in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. This decision, he suggested, may have affected competition results for athletes like Ms. McLaughlin, who participated in those games.
He also mentioned that despite sending a letter with Senator Cantwell requesting documents about the 2021 doping scandal and seeking assurances for fair competition at future Olympic Games, WADA failed to respond. Moreover, he noted that WADA allowed the same athletes to compete again in the 2024 Paris Olympics without repercussions.
Cruz expressed shock over news reports suggesting that Utah officials were required by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), possibly with WADA's involvement, to acknowledge WADA's authority as a condition for hosting the 2034 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.
The senator reiterated his call for withholding U.S. funding from WADA until it demonstrates transparency and adherence to its mission concerning anti-doping measures. He looks forward to further discussions on holding WADA accountable and protecting athletes' interests.
