Today, the House of Representatives passed the Department of Defense Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2026 with a vote of 221 to 209. This act is aimed at strengthening America's military capabilities and ensuring national security.
Defense Subcommittee Chairman Ken Calvert emphasized the importance of providing resources to the military, stating, "Providing our men and women in uniform with the resources they need to keep America safe is one of the most important constitutional responsibilities of Congress." He highlighted that this bill prioritizes innovation by expanding programs that quickly deploy advanced systems to military personnel.
Chairman Tom Cole expressed support for the bill, saying, "America’s military ensures that the call of duty never echoes unanswered. The Fiscal Year 2026 Defense Appropriations Act reflects that same unwavering commitment to our national security and the heroes in uniform who defend it."
The act provides a total discretionary allocation of $831.5 billion, which remains consistent with the previous fiscal year. It focuses on enhancing America's military superiority through investments in advanced aircraft, modernization of nuclear capabilities, and missile defense systems.
Additionally, it includes measures to care for troops and their families by implementing a pay increase and improving quality of life. The bill also aims to create a more efficient Department of Defense by reducing civilian workforce numbers and eliminating wasteful spending.
Furthermore, it supports counter-drug programs and aligns with policies from President Trump's administration regarding funding prohibitions on certain social issues.
