House Oversight Committee schedules interviews with tech firms over online radicalization

The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform will conduct transcribed interviews with the general counsels of Discord, Reddit, Steam, and Twitch to address concerns about online radicalization. The committee is seeking information on how these platforms handle instances of users inciting politically motivated acts.

Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) announced the shift to transcribed interviews after an earlier request for CEOs to testify in person was changed due to the ongoing government shutdown. According to Chairman Comer: “In light of the Democrat government shutdown, the House Oversight Committee is moving forward with our investigation into the online radicalization of forum users by conducting transcribed interviews with representatives from Discord, Reddit, Steam, and Twitch. In the wake of the assassination of Charlie Kirk and other acts of politically motivated violence, Congress has a duty to oversee the online platforms that extremists have used to promote violence. We look forward to hearing from these companies about the actions they are taking to ensure their platforms are not exploited for nefarious purposes.”

The scheduled dates for these interviews are as follows: Valve/Steam on November 4, Discord on November 12, Reddit on November 18, and Twitch on November 20.
