Bloomfield man sentenced to over 17 years for sexual abuse of minor

A man from Bloomfield, New Mexico, has been sentenced to 17 years in federal prison for sexually abusing a minor who was incapacitated at the time of the offense. Donovan Pete, 44, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, admitted to engaging in and attempting to engage in a sexual act with a sleeping minor between February 26 and February 27, 2016.

Pete pleaded guilty to sexual abuse charges. After serving his prison sentence of 208 months, he will be required to spend 15 years on supervised release and must register as a sex offender. There is no parole available in the federal system.

The case was announced by Acting U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Justin A. Garris, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office. The investigation was conducted by the Farmington Resident Agency of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office with support from the Navajo Police Department and Navajo Department of Criminal Investigations. Assistant United States Attorney Brittany DuChaussee is prosecuting the case.
