A Connecticut-based certified public accountant has pleaded guilty to tax evasion after admitting to concealing more than $1.3 million in income over several years.
David X. Sullivan, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, and Thomas Demeo, Acting Special Agent in Charge of IRS Criminal Investigation in New England, announced that Edward J. Sodlosky, 71, of Middlebury, entered his plea in New Haven federal court. Sodlosky waived his right to be indicted and admitted guilt on charges related to tax evasion.
According to information presented in court, Sodlosky owned and operated Edward J. Sodlosky, Certified Public Accountant (“EJS-CPA”) in Naugatuck. Between 2016 and 2022, he prepared and filed joint income tax returns for himself and his spouse with the Internal Revenue Service. He also filed partnership returns for an entity called FinGLTD, which he co-owned with his spouse.
During this period, authorities said that Sodlosky “willfully cashed more than 2,000 client payment checks to hide income generated by EJS-CPA.” The statement continued: “As a result, a substantial amount of EJS-CPA’s business receipts was diverted from EJS-CPA’s bank accounts, and not reported in his joint income tax returns (Forms 1040 and 1040-SR) or partnership income tax returns (Form 1065).”
The investigation revealed that Sodlosky deposited money from these cashed checks into a network of business, personal, and nominee accounts under his control. He used a total of 15 different bank accounts as part of this scheme. Authorities determined that he failed to report $1,379,694.21 in additional income to the IRS during the seven-year span. This led to a calculated tax loss of $422,720 for the government.
Sodlosky is scheduled for sentencing before U.S. District Judge Sarala V. Nagala in Hartford on April 15, 2026. He faces up to five years in prison and is required to pay full restitution to the IRS.
He has been released on a $50,000 bond while awaiting sentencing.
The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation division and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Hal Chen.
