Select Committee Chairman John Moolenaar met with Guatemalan officials, including Ambassador Hugo Beteta and Ana Glenda Tager, Chief of Staff to the President of Guatemala, in Washington, D.C. The meeting focused on Chinese influence in Central America and its effects on U.S.-Guatemalan relations.
“In the meeting we discussed the situation at America’s southern border and the importance of U.S. national security. We also focused on China and its efforts to intimidate Guatemala because of its courageous stand with Taiwan. While too many countries bow to the bullying of Beijing, Guatemala stands with the people of Taiwan and prospers through a strong trade relationship. I support Guatemala’s efforts to oppose Chinese aggression in our hemisphere and look forward to working with Guatemala on areas of common ground,” said Moolenaar following the meeting.
The discussion is part of ongoing work by the Select Committee to address concerns about Chinese Communist Party activities in the Western Hemisphere. Earlier this week, Chairman Moolenaar also met with legislators from Panama.
