Yesterday, Sonny Perdue, Chancellor of the University System of Georgia and former Governor of Georgia, visited Allatoona High School in Acworth as part of the national History Rocks! Trail to Independence Tour. The event is part of the U.S. Department of Education's initiative to improve civic literacy among students ahead of the 250th anniversary of the United States.

During his visit, Perdue met with students, teachers, and district leaders to highlight Allatoona High School’s interactive approach to civics and history education. After a ceremony that included the national anthem and pledge of allegiance, Perdue addressed students about the importance of understanding civics and history as the nation prepares for its Semiquincentennial. Students participated in games focused on national and state history.

“Allatoona High School is helping young people understand American history not as something in a textbook, but as a story they are part of,” said University System of Georgia Chancellor Sonny Perdue. “When students learn our founding ideals and see their role in shaping Georgia’s future, they are building the foundation for leadership, college success, and meaningful careers.”

The History Rocks! initiative is a central element in the U.S. Department of Education’s America 250 celebrations. The program works with partners such as the America First Policy Institute, Turning Point USA, Hillsdale College, and over 50 other organizations through the America 250 Civics Education Coalition. This coalition seeks to expand opportunities for students to learn about key ideas and events in American history.

The tour emphasizes collaboration among K-12 schools, families, colleges, and community groups to promote civic education nationwide. By featuring schools like Allatoona High School during these events, organizers aim to foster civic pride and encourage young people to become informed citizens.
