An Anthony, New Mexico resident has been sentenced to nearly 20 years in federal prison for drug trafficking and firearms offenses. David Amaya, 43, received a sentence of 235 months after pleading guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

Court records show that in July and August 2024, Amaya sold methamphetamine from a tow-behind trailer located on his parents’ property. These transactions led law enforcement officers to obtain a search warrant for the property, which they executed on August 22, 2024.

During the search, agents recovered more than 1.18 kilograms of methamphetamine from the trailer and an attached makeshift bathroom structure. Additional quantities of methamphetamine were found in a clothing hamper and under a bed. Officers also seized two firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition at the scene.

Following his prison term, Amaya will be subject to five years of supervised release. There is no parole available in the federal system.

Acting U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison stated: “Acting U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Justin A. Garris, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office, made the announcement today.”

The case was investigated by the Las Cruces Resident Agency of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office with assistance from the Las Cruces Metro Narcotics Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Williams prosecuted the case.
