Milford man receives prison time and probation for threats against federal officer

A Milford resident, Hamilton Clark Smith, 61, was sentenced to 43 days in prison and one year of probation for threatening a federal law enforcement officer. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Sarala V. Nagala in Hartford.

According to information presented in court, Smith sent several threatening text messages on January 10 and 11, 2023, to a Deputy U.S. Marshal. The messages included threats to harm and kill the officer as well as threats directed at the officer’s family.

Smith was arrested on January 12, 2023, and remained in custody until February 16, 2023, when he was released on bond. He pleaded guilty on April 22, 2024, to making repeated harassing communications.

David X. Sullivan, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, stated: "HAMILTON CLARK SMITH, 61, of Milford, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Sarala V. Nagala in Hartford to 43 days of imprisonment, time already served, and one year of probation for threatening a federal law enforcement officer."

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lauren C. Clark.
