Committee on House Administration Chairman Bryan Steil recently led a roundtable with election integrity experts to discuss the Make Elections Great Again (MEGA) Act. The meeting focused on proposed reforms aimed at updating federal election laws and improving the security and reliability of American elections.
Chairman Steil described the MEGA Act as "the most comprehensive package of election reforms in a generation." He added, "I'm thankful to our guests for their valuable feedback on the legislation as we continue our work to make American elections great again."
Logan Churchwell, Research Director at Public Interest Legal Foundation, commented, "Elections will be great again when they are boring and reliable. MEGA is the culmination of decades of study and best practices development to modernize the NVRA's pre-Internet text. The bill provides precision tools for states to maintain voter rolls and secures the public's right to see these processes from end to end."
Hans Von Spakovsky, Senior Legal Fellow at The Edwin Meese III Institute for the Rule of Law, said, "This bill is needed to correct and fix longstanding problems in election administration, some caused by prior federal statutes that restrict the ability of state election officials to maintain accurate voter registration lists. It will benefit all voters by helping ensure the security and integrity of their most precious right - the right to vote."
Ken Cuccinelli, National Chairman of ETI and former Acting Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security and Attorney General of Virginia, stated, “The SAVE Act and the MEGA Act fix structural weaknesses in federal election law. Proof of citizenship and a clear prohibition on federal agency involvement in elections are common-sense standards. These are not issues the states can solve — they require federal action.”
Lucas Vebber, Deputy Counsel at Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty (WILL), noted, "WILL has done extensive work to improve transparency and security in our elections. We applaud Congressmen Steil’s leadership on these issues, and support these efforts to protect the vote nationwide."
Maggie Harrell, Federal Affairs Director at Foundation for Government Accountability, remarked, "Chairman Steil’s bill builds on the hard work that many states have done to strengthen election integrity and protect the vote and reinforces that bad actors will not be allowed to game the system. Free and fair elections are foundational to the greatness of this country, and all efforts must be made to protect them."
Justin Riemer, President & CEO* of Restoring Integrity and Trust in Elections (RITE), added: "RITE thanks Chairman Steil for the opportunity to discuss needed federal reforms to improve election security. Congress must act to address current challenges in ensuring the integrity of America’s elections and voter confidence." (*name and title for ID purposes only)
The Committee on House Administration holds oversight authority over federal elections. As part of its responsibilities within the U.S. House of Representatives official website, it manages House operations—including Capitol security measures strengthened after major events such as September 11th attacks or January 6th—and participates in joint committees related to Library and Printing functions (source). The committee also played a role in passing key legislation like the Help America Vote Act in 2002 which funded improvements intended both for accessibility enhancements as well as fraud prevention (source).
