The U.S. House of Representatives advanced a series of natural resources bills on Mar. 16, addressing issues such as the protection of Giant Sequoias, the creation of a new national park in Arizona, wildfire recovery at the Grand Canyon, and support for tribal sovereignty.

These legislative actions are significant because they aim to address urgent environmental threats, expand public lands access, and provide economic opportunities for Native American tribes. The measures also seek to improve disaster response and memorialize emergency medical services personnel.

House Committee on Natural Resources Chairman Bruce Westerman said, “The House Committee on Natural Resources has been hard at work stewarding American lands and resources. The Save Our Sequoias Act passed with overwhelming bipartisan support, bringing us closer to enacting urgent management tools to mitigate the extreme risks threatening ancient Giant Sequoias. We also passed legislation that will support wildfire recovery efforts, create a new National Park in Arizona for future generations to enjoy, provide new economic opportunity for Indian tribes and more. I thank my colleagues for their work in moving these bills forward.”

Among the bills advanced were H.R. 2709 (Save Our Sequoias Act), which provides emergency tools to protect Giant Sequoias after wildfires destroyed 20 percent of mature trees in recent years; H.R. 6380 (Chiricahua National Park Act), establishing Chiricahua as Arizona’s fourth national park; and H.R. 5729 (North Rim Restoration Act), authorizing emergency rebuilding at Grand Canyon National Park following last year’s Dragon Bravo Fire.

Other measures include H.R. 831 (Lower Colorado River Multi-Species Conservation Program Amendment Act) allowing funds to be placed in interest-bearing accounts; H.R. 1665 requiring online portals for broadband deployment applications across federal lands; H.R. 2196 extending authority for an EMS memorial; H.R. 2294 reauthorizing coastal observation systems; H.R. 3073 clarifying jurisdictional matters for the Shivwits Band of Paiutes; H.R. 528 mandating post-disaster reforestation projects; H.R. 4284 enabling cemetery land conveyance to local entities; H.R. 4467 modifying Vicksburg National Military Park boundaries; and H.R. 5254 supporting events at Gateway Arch National Park.

The advancement of these bills reflects ongoing congressional efforts to address conservation challenges, promote responsible land management, and enhance recreational opportunities nationwide.
