House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Chairman Mike Bost announced on Mar. 18 the start of a legislative hearing focused on 27 bills as part of the Committee’s initiative to update expired authorities, strengthen oversight, and modernize the delivery of healthcare, benefits, research, and infrastructure at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

The hearing is significant because many areas under review have not been comprehensively updated in three decades. The proposed legislation aims to ensure that VA programs remain accountable and responsive to veterans' needs.

Bost began by calling for a moment of silence for servicemembers currently serving in the Middle East and for those who recently lost their lives. He also expressed support for a VA employee who was shot in Jasper, Georgia, saying, "We are asking for strength, healing, and a full recovery. We are thinking of their family and V.A. colleagues who were impacted by this incident during this difficult time. We stand with them and hope for their quick recovery."

Bost said that Congress has a constitutional responsibility under Article I to write laws, authorize programs, and oversee how policies are carried out at the VA. He stated that reauthorization is not just procedural but allows Congress to evaluate whether programs work as intended: "Reauthorization also provides Congress with the means to modernize V.A. so it can better meet the needs of veterans today and in the future."

Several legislative proposals were highlighted during the hearing. These include Rep. Bergman’s VA Contracting and Procurement Act aimed at strengthening congressional oversight over major contracts; Dr. Miller-Meeks’ VA National Formulary Act designed to improve transparency in medication management; and Dr. Murphy’s VA Research Reform Act which seeks to centralize data systems for research coordination.

Bost emphasized bipartisan cooperation: "Today we will examine several proposals introduced by members of this Committee on both sides of the aisle that are designed to restore accountability, improve transparency, and ensure that V.A. remains focused on veterans." He concluded by thanking witnesses appearing before the committee and expressing his commitment to strengthening services for veterans.
