Senator Cassidy delivers remarks at hearing on HHS budget with Secretary Kennedy

Senator Bill Cassidy, chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, delivered remarks on Apr. 22 during a hearing with Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. to discuss President Trump's proposed Department of Health and Human Services budget for fiscal year 2027.

The discussion is significant as it addresses national concerns about health care affordability and access to essential medications. The committee is responsible for shaping legislation related to public health, education, workforce issues, and retirement programs in order to protect health and support worker rights, according to the official website.

In his opening statement as prepared for delivery, Cassidy said: "I’ve been traveling to Louisiana a lot, and affordability...is top of mind. And when patients speak to me about how expensive their prescription drugs are...there’s middlemen who are jacking up the price for their own profitability. Patients get that, and they want help." He added: "If the patient has the power...then prices tend to come down. The question is how we achieve that." Cassidy also highlighted recent efforts by the committee: "Last week...the HELP Committee held a hearing on increasing access to generic and biosimilar drugs...which cost less and allow families to keep more money in their pockets while still having access to the medicines they need." He pointed out that many ideas from his recent report were included in policies proposed in this year's budget.

Cassidy introduced his MVP agenda (Money and Value for Patients), which aims to give funds directly to patients rather than insurance companies for out-of-pocket costs if paired with price transparency measures. He also addressed concerns about rising costs related to Alzheimer’s disease care: "If we don’t come up with treatments and cures for Alzheimer’s and dementia, then the Boomer generation will bankrupt our country for the cost of care." He called for greater investment in science across diverse universities nationwide.

On reproductive health policy issues Cassidy said: "Protecting women from the dangers of chemical abortion drugs is a step we can take right now," noting disappointment among pro-life Louisianans regarding lack of action on this front. Addressing Secretary Kennedy directly he said: "Mr. Secretary, you have said every abortion is a tragedy," urging further study into abortion drug safety protocols.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee plays an influential role in federal regulations affecting health care policy across America according to its official website. It provides oversight over federal laws relating not only to public health but also labor matters—overseeing agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Concluding his remarks before yielding time Senator Bernie Sanders’ opening statement was recognized by Cassidy who thanked Secretary Kennedy again stating: “People in my state are struggling…We must meet the moment.”
