Samantha Flom, associate editor at Restoration News Media, said that proposed federal mandates for in vitro fertilization (IVF) insurance coverage raise concerns among pro-life advocates about the protection of human life from conception and respect for religious conscience objections.
The debate centers on the Helping to Optimize Patients’ Experience (HOPE) with Fertility Services Act, introduced by Reps. Zach Nunn and Debbie Wasserman Schultz in late March. The bill would require health plans covering pregnancy services to also cover IVF and related treatments.
"The bill does not include exceptions for those with religious or conscience objections to IVF—a procedure that the Catholic Church and many other Christians deem immoral," Flom wrote in an article on Restoration News. "Being pro-life means affirming the dignity of the preborn child and the right to life from the moment of conception. Simply put, IVF is not pro-life and instead is inherently anti-life for the countless embryos who never make it to birth. We should show deep compassion for those struggling with infertility and encourage ethical research to treat its causes—not encourage them to treat human life as a commodity, which is what the Wasserman Shultz/Nunn bill does. There's a word for the selective breeding of human beings to eliminate perceived defects: eugenics."
As reported by EWTN News, estimates suggest that 1.5 million to 1.8 million embryos created through IVF in the United States each year are never born. The process frequently results in excess embryos, many of which are discarded, donated to research, or left in indefinite storage. This scale of embryo loss has raised ethical questions among pro-life groups about the procedure's compatibility with respecting human life from conception.
Supporters of the HOPE Act say it helps families struggling with infertility by expanding access to diagnosis, treatment, and fertility preservation services through required insurance coverage, according to information provided by Rep. Nunn's office.
