CAST announced on Apr. 28 that it will hold a free public webinar focused on mental health and economic challenges in farming and ranching communities. The session will feature Florence Becot, PhD, a rural sociologist at Pennsylvania State University, who is also the Nationwide Insurance Early Career Professor in Agricultural Safety and Health.

The event aims to address the unique stressors faced by agricultural families due to economic pressures, unpredictable weather, isolation, and demanding work conditions. These factors can affect well-being differently than in other populations.

Becot will provide an overview of mental health issues within agriculture, examine social and structural contributors to these challenges, and discuss current policy efforts as well as community-based responses intended to support rural communities. "Dr. Becot will provide an overview of mental health and well-being in agriculture, examine the structural and social factors that contribute to these challenges, and discuss current and emerging responses — from policy to community-based interventions — that aim to support agricultural communities," CAST said.

The webinar is open for free registration to all interested parties including agricultural stakeholders, extension professionals, policymakers, or anyone interested in farm viability or rural health.
