Chair Joni Ernst of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship said on Apr. 29 that entrepreneurs from across the United States have played a key role in driving innovation throughout the nation's history. Ernst made her remarks during a committee hearing, highlighting contributions from states such as Iowa, South Carolina, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.
The hearing was held to recognize the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence and to reflect on how small businesses and innovators have shaped economic growth. The event also looked ahead to planned celebrations for America's 250th birthday this July 4th.
Ernst said, “For 250 years, bold Americans have conquered what was thought to be impossible.” She added that President Trump chose Iowa last summer to begin the nation’s anniversary celebrations because of its unique place in American history. "At the Iowa State Fairgrounds, he underscored Iowa’s unique role in the American story. And I would have to agree. Look no further than our Iowa State Fair, where the creativity and entrepreneurship of our small businesses and farmers are on full display! As we continue to strive to fulfill our founders’ promise of a more perfect union, I have no doubt America’s small businesses and entrepreneurs will continue leading the way.”
Ernst described how early settlers built towns through entrepreneurial spirit and resourcefulness: “Massachusetts embodies the American entrepreneurial spirit... Within new towns, small businesses were the catalyst for success.” She also highlighted New Hampshire's leadership in industrialization and South Carolina's merchant activity in colonial times.
