State department names 30-year officer to role in energy diplomacy

Laura Lochman, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, is now a deputy assistant secretary in the Bureau of Energy Resources, the U.S. State Department announced last month.

Lochman, who served as Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs for Canada, Haiti, and the Caribbean from January to September, became the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Diplomacy on Dec. 13, the state department announced on its website the same day.

Lochman has a B.A. in International Studies and French from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and also studied at the Université de Montpellier in France, according to her biography on the state department website. 

She has served for more than 30 years at assignments in Brazil, Denmark, Canada, Colombia, Moscow, Spain and others, her biography states. Her offices included Deputy Chief of Mission, Economic Counselor, Consul General, Chief of the Trade and Investment Unit and Environment, Science and Technology Officer.

Lochman's served in Washington D.C. in the Office of Cuban Affairs, the Bureau of South Asian Affairs and the Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs, as well as two years as the Deputy Director of the Office of Central European Affairs. 

Lochman was a policy advisor from the state department to the Nature Conservancy, her biography states.  

Lochman speaks several languages, including French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian. She also has a black belt in karate, according to her biography.
